Castle+Lagers+inaugural+Homegrown+Tour+brings+together+the+best+of+South+Africa

On Saturday, Castle Lager wrapped up its first ever Homegrown Tour, a purely South African adventure that showcased the best this country has to offer over the course of a whirlwind five days.

Traversing the barley farms of Kimberley, joining master brewers at SAB’s World of Beer in Johannesburg, and tasting freshly brewed Castle Lager at Newlands Brewery in Cape Town, 26 lucky South Africans – many of whom had never left their home towns before – experienced first-hand everything and everyone involved in brewing the perfect pint of Castle Lager. "The tour was awesome," said enthusiastic participant, SibaphiweWakudiashi from Umtata. "I've never really travelled so for Castle Lager to give me this opportunity to see my country is truly amazing and inspiring."

The Tour was educational and entertaining in equal measure, with no stone being left unturned to unearth the best of South Africa, and bring it all together for the participants. Dinner with BafanaBafana's Siphiwe Tshabalala and ItumelengKhune, a cook-off with Justin Bonello, a bonfire and a few ice cold Castle Lager’s with Johnny Clegg and a private Q&A session with Schalk Burger and Jean de Villiers were just a few of the once-in-a-lifetime experiences the participants shared.

Castle+Lagers+Search+for+Bok+SuperFans+Begins!

Castle Lager, creator and sponsor of the wildly popular Bafana Bafana and Proteas SuperFans, is extending its search for South Africa's ultimate sports fans into new territory: rugby. As the only sponsor of all three major national sports teams, Castle Lager will start the search for the Springbok SuperFans during the Lions vs. Cheetahs clash in Coca Cola Park on Friday, 6 May.

The selection of the Bok SuperFans will follow a new format. Instead of dressing in their best - and most embarrassing - supporters garb, those fans vying for a spot as a rugby SuperFan will have to focus their energy, concentrate and bring all their strength to bear on scrumming a heavy duty bakkie filled with 46 cases of Castle Lager from the half way line over the try line as quickly as humanely possible.

Proteas fan Gareth Brown was crowned one of 27 Castle Lager Proteas SuperFans on Friday, 26th November at a celebration hosted by Jacaranda at Rhapsody’s in Centurion. Wearing a bra and mini skirt made purely of Castle Lager bottle tops, Gareth beat off stiff competition to win the title and a trip to India to accompany the Proteas as they take on the world during next year’s World Cup.

Competing for the prize was 28 year old Pienaar Kloppers from Centurion, who demonstrated his devotion to the Proteas by facing down his biggest fear: heights. Pienaar completed a skydive and bungee jump – all within 24 hours of each other.

Not to be outdone, 47 year old Thabo Molemohi, a self confessed lifetime supporter of the Proteas, shaved his head and painted it green in support of the boys, while Joe Mohamed from Carletonville made a Castle Lager Makarapa and Gumboots, and even recited a poem for the team.

The Proteas received a welcome boost on Saturday when die-hard cricket fans threw their vanity to the wind and dressed up as the ultimate Castle Lager Proteas SuperFan in an effort to win a much-coveted trip to India to accompany the Proteas as they take on the world next year.

It all came together for the four finalists who were chosen to compete for the title on the field at SuperSport Park during the tea break. After a grueling session that saw them judged on their cricket knowledge, their passion for the Proteas, their dress and – most importantly – crowd support, Klaas Berkenbosch and Anton Richter were crowned the winners.

Klaas, dressed up as a Castle Lager Superhero, wowed the crowds with his dance moves and told the judges that he wanted nothing more than to combine his passion for hot curry and Castle Lager with cricket. Lifelong Proteas supporter, Anton, who painted himself white and donned a Watermelon hat, said he’d give anything to support the boys in India – especially given their stellar performance at SuperSport Park.

As the only sponsor of all three major national sports teams, the beer behind our boys, Castle Lager has once again proven why it is the catalyst for bringing fans together by rewarding 27 passionate cricket fans, dubbed the Castle Lager Proteas SuperFans, with a trip to India to witness the Proteas take on the world. The Proteas SuperFan search follows hot on the heels of the successful Soccer SuperFans, who stood united as Castle ambassadors to rally support for Bafana Bafana throughout the 2010 World Cup.

Castle Lager Marketing Manager Charl Bassil says the beer has shown its commitment to SA sport for more than a century and will continue to bring sports-loving South Africans together. “Castle Lager hopes to rally the nation behind the Proteas in the same way it got behind Bafana Bafana and we believe that the 27 Castle Lager Proteas SuperFans will encourage our boys to bring the trophy home this time around,” says Bassil.

A+SALUTE+TO+MAKHAYA+NTINI

Castle Lager celebrates Makhaya Ntini’s 100th first class cricket Test when South Africa clashes against old foes, England. This is the first time a black player has achieved this milestone in the history of South African cricket.

SAB head of sponsorships and alliances Rob Fleming says Castle’s relationship with Test cricket harks back to 1992. “Castle Lager has sponsored Test cricket since South Africa was readmitted into international cricket and we’re proud to be associated with the sport and with cricketers of Makhaya’s calibre,” he says.

Ntini’s success epitomises a classic “rags to riches” story. Born and raised in rural Mdingi near King William’s Town in the Eastern Cape, he was discovered by a development programme representative and sent to Dale College where he proved himself to be a promising young cricketer.

He made his South African one-day debut against New Zealand in Perth early in 1998 and his Test debut against Sri Lanka in Cape Town in the same year. Some of his most notable achievements include: 10 for 220 against England at Lords (Aug 2003); leading wicket taker in the world in 2003 with 59; 200th wicket in 55th Test against Zimbabwe in March 2005; 13 wickets for 132 runs against Port of Spain in Trinidad (April 1005); and back-to-back 10 wickets for 178 runs at Wanderers against Australia (March 2006); amongst others.
